PORTLAND, Maine, April 19, 2021—MyHealthMath announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed physician and public policy expert Dr. Elizabeth Coté, MD, MPA, as its new President. Before joining MyHealthMath as Chief Mission Officer in 2019, Dr. Coté spent over a decade working to reduce health disparities in the U.S. and abroad. As President, Dr. Coté will spearhead MyHealthMath’s work to leverage decision support tools to address persistent health inequities in the private health insurance market.
Dr. Coté holds a medical degree from Harvard Medical School and served as a White House Fellow under the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. She has led international health improvement initiatives in France, India, and Iraq, where she was awarded the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Civilian Service Achievement Award. She also earned national recognition for her efforts to reduce opioid use in Northern Maine as the clinical director for the Indian Health Services (IHS) Micmac Service Unit. Since joining MyHealthMath, Dr. Coté has applied an equity lens to product improvements and new initiatives, most notably launching MyHealthMath’s health benefit equity audit, a free tool that illuminates opportunities to promote equity through benefit design changes.
“We’re fortunate to have Dr. Coté’s experience and perspective to guide us at what is a critical juncture for our company,” says MyHealthMath Founder and CEO Bob Watterson. “By empowering individuals to make the most of their health benefits, MyHealthMath is poised to become a major player in the health benefits decision support software landscape. As we evolve, Dr. Coté’s leadership will help us deepen the application of our tools to promote health benefit equity.”
MyHealthMath’s work to advance health benefit equity fills a significant gap in national health equity efforts, says Dr. Coté.
“Achieving health equity requires paying more attention to private health insurance. It covers over half of Americans, many of whom face chronic conditions and financial insecurity. And more often than not, these individuals are in the wrong health plan, losing over a thousand dollars a year. Through more equitable plan design and individual employee plan-choice support, MyHealthMath can ensure that every single person can access the best health benefits for them. We’re making an immediate difference in people’s lives, and I feel privileged to lead this work.”
